One thing that has been frustrating those in the media now that Donald Trump is about to be President of the United States has been his reluctance to hold conventional press conferences. Trump has not held a full news conferences since late July and canceled a proposed one in mid-December where he said he would use to address his business interests. He has since announced that he will hold a presser next week.
In the absence of regular press conferences and interaction with the media, Trump has taken to Twitter as his main mode of public communication, generally taking to the social media platform daily to send out a few missives that are then widely reported by the press. Case in point, this morning, with the news centered on the president-elect meeting with intelligence leaders to be briefed on a report that shows Russia meddled in the election, he sent out tweets blaming the DNC for the hacks and calling people “stupid” for not wanting a good relationship with Russia.
In regards to this issue, MSNBC host Joy Reid appeared on SiriusXM Radio’s The Dean Obeidallah Show yesterday and issued a bit of a challenge to the mainstream media.
Host Dean Obeidallah asked Reid about Trump’s tweeting habits and whether there would come a time soon where he’d reach a “jump the shark” moment and the media would stop breathlessly covering them. While Reid said she hoped so, she also posed the following scenario for the press.
“The say, look, we’re all going to agree that we’ll blackout Donald Trump’s tweets, for let’s say, a week,” Reid noted. “Starve him of the thing he needs most, which is free publicity. He literally is like a machine that feeds on attention and publicity.”
She continued, “If we say, for a week, that we’re not going to cover anything you say unless you say it in a press conference, then literally say we won’t put you on TV unless you do it in front of us, unless you come to us, we won’t put you on TV. If the media did that for a week, Dean, he’d do a press conference!”
Reid added that he doesn’t have to do a press conference because “we slavishly read everything he tweets.” She further explained that aides like Sean Spicer and Kellyanne Conway are losing credibility because they stick their necks out to explain his tweets and he’ll immediately contradict them with another one.

They misunderstand Twitter. The whole point is that we can read his words for ourselves without the media filter. That drives them totally buggy.
Isn’t bypassing the obsolete and biased media Trumps whole reason for tweeting?
They just don’t get it.
I hope nobody tells them so the don’t catch on.
If Media Didn’t Cover MSNBC for a Week, then we……
Keep feeding em fish heads Donald!
Actually he would probably just stop doing them at all, since between the new media and Twitter, he could get his words out more effectively. And by “new media” I include Fox News, although they are MSM in many regards, people like Tucker and Sean would do a better job of putting the information out anyway. It would be suicidal by the alphabetnetworks.
As a biker chick: “Shove it twit, we don’t care what you think!!!”…
>>If we say, for a week, that we’re not going to cover anything you say unless you say it in a press conference<<
Says someone no one ever heard of at a network no one watches.
If the media didn’t cover Trumps tweets, who would misquote and mischaracterize them, or otherwise use them to stir up animus against him?
Trump has 19.1 million twitter followers. The networks just don’t seem to understand that Trump does not NEED them.
Imbecile talking press head. I see a scheduled Trump presser in 2 days.
If they didn’t read his Tweets they would be the only ones who didn’t. I downloaded Twitter just so I could follow
That we don’t need them to talk about it at all?
Does the Democrat msm have a death wish? If they don’t cover Pres. Trump’s Tweets, the conservative media outlets will, further marginalizing the Leftist sources. Great!
She seems to think no one will know about his tweets if the media doesn’t tell people, but his twitter feed itself has 40 million followers. Everyone will know what he says even if the media ignores him completely.
Trump continues to occupy the enemedia’s head, rent free.
It is funny, Trump bypasses the media by using twitter and the media gets all pissy about it…
Obozo is constantly late for press conferences and the media keeps licking his boots like they are made out of powdered sugar…
Seems the bell curse has to have a new sigma: It forgot to include the very low end of “journalists”.
To Joy Reid: Seriously?! Only a handful of people actually watch your TV show, and even fewer give a sh!t about what you think or say.
Suspect you are just jealous that only a handful of like-minded family, friends and coworkers care about your tweets.
Joy Reid is worthless, weak and of no importance. The butt-hurt must be terribly painful. Put some salve on that, you self-hating, wanna be, Jew beeaatch.
[ “The say, look, we’re all going to agree that we’ll blackout Donald Trump’s tweets, for let’s say, a week,” Reid noted. “Starve him of the thing he needs most, which is free publicity. He literally is like a machine that feeds on attention and publicity.” ]
Trump ain’t using twitter to talk tot he press, he is using it to talk to the people…. DIRECTLY
The media will never understand this…
I worked in a major campaign years ago (i.e., before the Internet). We’d put out multiple “press releases” virtually every day – faxed to 20 or so news organizations…
That’s as far as they got. Never reached the voters. Being a conservative, the media figured that the best option was to block off access to the candidate…and it worked – the leftist won.
The media is having a VERY TOUGH TIME dealing with the fact that they are no longer needed when Trump has 19 million follows (20 million actually, I just joined, LOL). The media obviously wants to try to spin what Trump says, but ONLY because they’re reaching many millions of people, which is why they keep reacting to his says.
They’re cornered…ignore him at their own peril, or respond to try to get control over what the public hears – but it’s a futile effort on their part, and it effectively drives even more people to directly follow him.
Like Ronald Reagan’s time in Hollywood, Donald Trump used his time on reality TV to learn how to play these schmucks. It is going to be fun watching them foam at the mouth for the next four years and, hopefully, eight.
For years, you would listen to the top of the hour news, even on Rush stations, and the lead story was:
Not, what the Republicans said or did . . . it was what the Democrats said or did in response to the Republicans.
The first news report of every story was and still is the Democrat spin of the story.
Now, Trump has Tweeter. Life is sweet.
