Rubio used this third round of questioning time in the Tillerson confirmation hearing today to clarify and explain why he asked so many tough questions of Tillerson with respect to China, Russia, and Saudi Arabia.
Rubio gives a really great speech and makes a great point about not being hypocritical when it comes to having moral clarity.
I think that’s a tough thing though when it comes to countries we deal with. Yes, Saudi Arabia is a human rights nightmare to say the least. But we also consume much of their oil so we have to be somewhat cautious in what we say and how we treat them.
That doesn’t mean we have to whitewash it or completely overlook their violations though. They want to sell us the oil as much as we want to buy it.
There’s always politics involved on the world stage, but I think Rubio is certainly more right on these issues than he is wrong and it’s good to see Tillerson have to answer these questions.
