Former House speaker Newt Gingrich repeatedly ripped the media for what he said was ongoing unfair coverage of President-elect Donald Trump, calling certain news outlets “propaganda” and some members of the media “idiots.”
“The same idiots who failed to understand that Trump was going to win the nomination, then failed to understand that Trump was going to win the general election, are now commenting on Trump’s cabinet,” Gingrich said Tuesday during an event at the Heritage Foundation titled ‘The Principles of Trumpism.’
He said that the news media, which should be referred to as the “propaganda media,” is refusing to take Trump or his victory seriously.
“The propaganda media cannot come to grips with the level of talent that they’re dealing with,” Gingrich said. “They are so rabid, they are so ideologically committed, they are so terrified of the future, that they can’t stop and ask themselves, ‘What is this anomaly? What is this remarkable thing? What is it we should know about the next president of the United States?'”
The former House Speaker went on to slam specific outlets and reporters, including The New York Times, the Washington Post, and Washington Post blogger Jennifer Rubin.
“A Post … pseudo-conservative described this cabinet as, “ignoramuses, billionaires, and a few generals,”” he said. “The person who wrote that, of course, it was an idiotic comment, and that person clearly is an ignoramus.”
Gingrich added that Trump has a talent for commanding the media’s attention that is only comparable to one other president.
“He had an instinct for totally dominating the media,” he remarked. “I’d say the only other president who really had the totality that Trump has is Abraham Lincoln.”
