HELENA, Mont. (AP) — The Republican who hopes to win Montana’s congressional seat in a special election next week has switched gears and now enthusiastically backs Donald Trump.
Greg Gianforte while running last year for governor did not appear with Trump during his visit to Montana when it had become clear that Trump would become the Republican presidential nominee.
Gianforte only reluctantly endorsed Trump later on during the presidential race.
The multimillionaire technology entrepreneur lost his gubernatorial bid but transformed himself into a Trump supporter after announcing he would run for Congress.
Gianforte has adopted Trump’s “drain-the-swamp” motto and is positioning himself as a populist outsider.
Montana voters will decide on Thursday whether to choose Gianforte or Democrat Rob Quist.
Quist is a singer, guitarist and award-winning songwriter.
