Rep. Jackie Speier, D-Calif., on Monday offered a tongue-in-cheek apology to “tarantula-Americans” for suggesting that the big, hairy spiders known as tarantulas spin webs.
“I think of a spider web with a tarantula in the middle, and the tarantula, in my view, is Vladimir Putin,” she said in a hearing about Russia’s influence on the U.S. election.
She said she imagines Putin trying to entice Trump administration officials.
But it was quickly noted that tarantulas don’t spin webs, and instead burrow into the ground.
Speier apologized on Twitter:
“I apologize to all tarantula-Americans who I inadvertently offended by suggesting u spin webs,” she wrote. “Sending a basket of insects to nearest burrow.”
It was accompanied by a picture of a tarantula saying it accepts her apology.
