Former White House communications director Jen Psaki said even Josh Earnest, press secretary for former President Barack Obama, made mistakes in his role, but nothing that compared with Sean Spicer’s errors.
“Every press secretary screws up. Everybody who’s ever had Sean’s job … There were times when Josh said things he wished he hadn’t said. Now it was never at this level, to be fair,” Psaki said in a Sunday interview on CNN’s “Reliable Sources.”
Psaki blamed the Trump administration’s failure to create “goodwill” with the media for how they chose to respond to Spicer’s comparison of Adolf Hitler and Syrian leader Bashar Assad last week.
“There isn’t a lot of goodwill and therefore, there isn’t a lot of bandwidth for reporters to kinda give you a break or people to give you a break,” Psaki added.
While speaking to reporters at a press conference last week, Spicer said Hitler didn’t use chemical weapons during the Holocaust. The comment was inaccurate and widely criticized by lawmakers.
